Jumpstart Series: Woodcut - Working with the Grain

$95.00

Instructor: Pam Van Dyk

Date: Saturday, November 14, 2026

Woodcut is the oldest of the relief printing methods and produces a unique grain when printed. In this class, you'll design an image, transfer it to a 6 × 8 inch shina plywood block, and carve it with gouges, learning to read the grain and letting it shape your marks. We'll cover tool handling, registration, and printing with a press. You’ll leave with a small edition. Expect texture, surprise, and a few happy accidents. All materials included.

Materials supplied include:

  1. one 6 × 8 inch block of shina plywood

  2. one sheet of Rives BFK Lightweight 19 × 26 inches

  3. all needed printing supplies (ink, brayers, gouges)

*additional wood plates may be purchased at the studio

Students can either bring a sketch to work from, work abstractly or use an image we have on hand to explore the medium.

This workshop will take place at Triangle Printmakers Collective: 1002 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC 27604

Participants will receive an email about a week out with more details regarding parking, directions, and details about the day.

Skill Level: Beginner (Some relief experience is helpful but not required.)

Participants: Ages 18+
